Software Review of:
Legacy Family Tree 3.0
Millennia

From the November, 2000 issue of PC Alamode Magazine
by Lou Harris
boxInside the box is a real manual! How unusual! It has many screen shots, is easily understood and, at 313 pages appears to be fairly complete.

There are several screens of FAQ's on the website and it might be helpful if you are considering a software purchase. There are LDS specific questions if you are in need of such. I'd recommend viewing the "online tour".

There is a training video available: Legacy 3.0: Family Tree Video Training for $14.95.  Order online or it is available from

General capacities
Over 1 million individuals and families; 60 children per marriage; unlimited events per individual; unlimited spouses per individual; unlimited parents per individual (to allow for information on birth and adoptive parents); unlimited sources per event; unlimited pictures per individual or marriage.  Version 3.0 has over 50 new features--one of which is that you can automatically search five different websites for genealogical information: Family Search, Ancestry, Genealogy Portal, RootsWeb or GenDex

Installation
Part of the installation is downloading the latest patches and builds from the Internet. The instructions are on the website. It takes approximately 30 minutes. Users are encouraged to periodically visit the website for additional downloads. From their website, you can "sign-up" for Legacy News and be notified of program updates. Or--send $5.00 and they send a CD-ROM as the files are large.

I had an interesting/aggravating experience as far as installation is concerned. Somehow, after accomplishing the download of the "latest patches and builds", my dial-up networking is not working the way it did before the download! I am not a happy camper.

This is the message I sent to Support

Dial-up Networking no longer works from browser "StepsTo Reproduce: I am using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0. After I installed Legacy, IE5.0 can not dial up. I get the error window: "No connection to the Internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click Work Offline. Click try again to attempt to connect." The same thing happens when I attempt to send and receive messages using Outlook express version 5.0. However my ISP icon in the dialup networking folder will still connect OK. IE and Outlook Express were working fine just prior to installing Legacy. The problem occurred after I installed Legacy and attempted to connect in Legacy to update the software. I used the ISP icon to connect and update but the dialup networking will not work from within Legacy or from IE. It works with difficulty from Outlook Express. (Outlook Express will fail to connect to a number of my e-mail addresses and finally on the last one will connect and (check that address only). I am using a Dell Dimension XPSR450 with 256M of RAM and an 8GB hard drive with about 4 GB free.I have restarted a number of times and the problem remains. I am the reviewer for the Alamo PC Organization in San Antonio Texas and am trying to write a review of Legacy for the 4,000 readers of our monthly magazine.
And — this was their reply (after telling me to look at the FAQ's on the website which I'd already done):
"There is nothing in Legacy that would interfere with your Dial-up Adapter. We have never had this sort of thing reported before."

So, I don't think much of their "support". Plus, I noticed that they apparently don't care that I was writing a review of their product!

Family or Pedigree view
The two main navigational screens are the Family and Pedigree Views. Both show multiple generations of your family where you can quickly navigate up and down; adding or editing individuals, spouses and children. Pictures, sound and video can be linked to anyone. Extensive notes, research notes and medical information can be entered.

Pictures, sounds and video
The Picture Gallery lets you link an unlimited number of pictures, sounds and video to individuals, marriages, events, places or sources. You can also create narrated slide shows. Many common formats are supported. Pictures can be scanned in directly as well as edited within this program. A sound file can be linked to each picture. The program supports bmp, jpeg, macpaint, msp, tiff, wpg and others but the higher-end Adobe, Corel and Microsoft graphics extensions are not listed. Pictures and sounds can be displayed in a slide show format with various dissolve effects between pictures. Pictures can include captions, dates and descriptions.  You can add already-recorded sound files or record directly into the program (microphone required) or play a tape recording and the program will accept that.

Split screen
Legacy lets you display up to seven Family and Pedigree views for any Family File, which allows you to compare different individuals, families, generations and lines. You can display two completely different Family Files on the screen at the same time so you can compare and copy information from one to the other. New individuals can be added in either view.

Reports
Legacy offers a multitude of reports, charts, lists and forms including: Family Group Sheets, Pedigree Charts, Descendant and Ancestor Charts, Individual Reports, Timelines, Lineage Reports, Ancestor or Descendant Books, Census Forms, Surname Summary, Source Citations, Relationships, Research Logs and, For LDS members, Temple Ordinance information.

Merging duplicates
Legacy has "IntelliMerge"" for combining information on two people. This feature combines duplicate records while preserving conflicting information such as alternate names, events or notes.

Name List
The Name List is the most advanced editing system available. All information can be viewed and edited while browsing the Name List. Tabs provide immediate access for editing notes, adding events, assigning sources and more. You can add unlimited alternate given and surnames, unlimited events and while there is ample space for address lines and there is specific space for both title prefix and suffix as well as URL and e-mail address, there are only two places for telephone numbers.

Name Lists include all individuals in the current Family File with their RIN, gender and three tag settings which can be customized.

Additional features
The Source Clipboard feature lets you assign sources to specific pieces of information.
The calendar range is 1700 to 2099. The date calculator can figure birth and death dates as well as ages (at christening, marriage or death).

There are three types of address lists: Mailing, Repository and Event. You can print labels and name tags from the address list--handy for family reunions. The address fields are probably adequate but only one field for e-mail address (and you can click on it to bring up a message form) and only two for phone number needs to be increased. You can hyperlink to a fellow-researchers genealogy URL from within that person's data.

Legacy imports Personal Ancestral File (PAF) and GEDCOM files. I tried GEDCOM and it imported quickly and easily. Exportation to a GEDCOM is also OK. You can specify which individuals as well as specific information to be included. For LDS members, there are fields for those church-specific requirements with source documentation.

An interesting feature is the chance to assign a source to any record as it is imported. This is called “AutoSource”. When you begin an import, Legacy prompts you for a source citation. You can select from the Master Source List or create a New Source.
There are step-by-step instructions for creating your own genealogy web pages.
