Software Review of:
DiskAction
A Free Utility from PC Magazine

From the October, 2001 issue of PC Alamode Magazine

Has your hard drive ever started spinning furiously, with no input from you? Have you wondered if a virus has taken over your computer? Well, here’s a free utility from PC Magazine that scans the hard drive of your choice and tells you what program or process is using it. It’s easy to get—download diskact.zip. You’ll have to log onto their download site, but it doesn’t cost anything for new users. Then create a folder and expand diskact.zip file into the folder. Finally, create a shortcut to diskaction.exe and click on it to launch the program.

Once launched, DiskAction places an icon in the tray. Right-clicking on the icon brings up a menu that lets you choose what drives to monitor (you can select more than one) and a View Processes selection lets you actually see what processes or programs are using the drives you select. A Refresh button rescans the drives to show later accesses. That’s all there is to it.

While visiting the PC Magazine Web site, I read some discussions about problems using DiskAction with Windows Me. All I can say is that it posed no problem on my computer, which uses Windows Me; but be aware that you may see some problems if you use it with Windows Me. DiskAction runs under Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows 98, as well as Windows Me.

While you’re on the PC Magazine Web site, look around. There’s a wealth of free utilities there
