I
do not remember where I found the TestCPU program. This is a simple freeware
utility program that will analyze the Central Processing Unit in your system
and give you all of the specifications for it as well as a picture of what
it looks like. There is every type of detail about the processor that you
could want to know. The program can be downloaded from the following web
address, http://testcpu.webz.cz/testcpue.zip.
You can also download additional results that other people have e-mailed
to the program writer from the following address, http://testcpu.webz.cz/results.zip.
These results will allow you to compare your system to just about every
processor that has been made.
The program does not need to be installed. Simply unzip into the folder of your choice along with the ini file that is included in the results.zip file. There is a tab that will give you the information on all the processors that have been made. This is a very interesting item within the program. There are dates and codenames and qualities of the CPUs that I found to be very interesting reading. This little program will tell you about your processor and then you can read the history of all the processors that have come before as well as after yours. The program has not been updated since January of 2000 so the specifications are getting to be outdated. The museum data starts with the I386DX and includes most of the CPUs until the Pentium III E. The I386DX came out in October of 1985 and had 275,000 transistors. Compare this with the Pentium III E, which came out in October of 1999 and has 28.1 million transistors. The processor has progressed from 16 mhz to 2 ghz or 2000 mhz in this short amount of time. That is simply amazing to me. This program will not do much more than give you a lot of trivial facts and figures that you can use around the water cooler, but it is pretty cool to have the information available to you. I hope that the programmer will add to the program in the near future, as this is a very informative little jewel.
