you ever heard the term disk dancers? They’re people, usually
teenagers, who use free AOL disks to hop from one account to another, never
paying for Internet service. How about Silliwood or Hollywired?
Both refer to Silicon Hollwood, the convergence of interactive television,
movies and television.
I grabbed both of these definitions from Jargon Watch, a pocket sized book that you should store on your reference shelf next to your Funk and Wagnall’s. Or carry it with you; use a word a day and you’ll sound hip. I love words and got a kick out of pickling, or archiving a working model of an old computer to read data stored in that system’s format. Or Uninstalled, a euphemism for being fired. Try Egosurfing, or searching the Internet for your own name. The author cruises newsgroups, archived e-mail, chat rooms, Web sites and office water coolers to pick up new words and phrases that make sense or make him smile. He maintains a Web site, but this little compendium is the best of the bunch. I got my copy at Half Price Books; they had a million of them on the shelves for a mere $1.98 apiece. My favorite: crash test dummies, those of us who pay for unstable, not-ready-for-prime-time software foisted on us by greedy computer companies. Oh Yeah.
