Software Review of:
Update Now
The Software that Isn’t!

From the June, 2000 issue of PC Alamode Magazine
by Rose Lynn Saenger
According to the literature Update Now by IMSI detects out-of-date software and downloads updates automatically. I installed the software with ease.

Now the first thing that I needed to do was to activate the software.  With a couple of left clicks I had a dialog window that offered me the opportunity to open a new account and I was taken to a web page that said it was unable to display.  I was given the option to return to the home page for update.com and was given a major surprise.  There were links to items of interest regarding PC’s and a lengthy paragraph stating that they were working on affiliations with vendors and expected to "go live" with their web site on July 1, 2000.  It further stated that updatenow.com will offer support via live chat, e-mail, and bulletin boards to users that need a little extra help.

NOTE: <www.update.com> also stated that they are looking for persons familiar with Mac, Linux or BEos operating systems.  Persons with 3-5 years of verifiable experience with Mac, Linux, and BEos are needed to do reviews, test, and provide utilities for specific OS and answer bulletin boards for specific OS.
I next went to <www.imsisoft.com>, the parent company for Update Now and went to "downloads".  Ah! Here I was bound to find update downloads!  But no, I found Netaccelerator for faster browsing, Floorplan for remodeling projects, Flow LT for professional charts and diagrams, and Turboproject LT for planning events from weddings to projects.

This has been a surprising turn of events, or should I say reviews.  Twelve to eighteen months ago, I did use update now as a web interface.  It had been written up in the Washington DC Newspaper as a free service.  At that time, I felt that I could access updates on hardware drivers myself and could not see that I had a need for software updates.

Update Now has been beneficial for two reasons:

  1. it has enabled me to test out PowerCleaner Pro and
  2. It has reinforced the need to watch copyright dates and to be cautious about buying software second hand.
I invite you to join me in visiting the web site at <www.update.com> in July to see what it is all about.
