Whoops!
What did I get myself into this month? My favorite method of learning is
reading and in the past year I cannot get enough time to read about computers.
As a result, I was excited to get a book that would tell me more about
a program (Microsoft Word) that I had installed less than four months ago.
My first introduction to O’Reilly Books was the first review that I did
for PC Alamode. At that time I fell in love with the style, format,
content, and covers of the computer-related books published by O’Reilly
and Associates. Another reason that I like O’Reilly is that most of the
authors organize in a way that is easy for me to follow and understand.
Learning Word Programming by Steven Roman (O’Reilly & Assoc.
1998) is no exception. It contains twenty-one chapters with nineteen of
them listed under three sections.
Those sections are
Sections 1 and 2 provide the information needed for a beginner to get acquainted with Visual Basic and its uses. Even with this preliminary information, this book would be easier if the reader has an elementary knowledge of programming and/or of visual basic. (I clearly am a novice.) It is easy to access Visual Basic in Word by going to tools>macros>visual basic editor. From that point you are ready to program word to handle your usage the way you want it done. Also, from that point you are ready to utilize Learning Word Programming. I have been introduced to a tremendous amount of vocabulary that has meanings entirely different from the meanings I have known for the same words in the past. Also, as happens every month, I have learned new ways of describing things that occur in the windows environment such as docked and floating windows. But I will let you read to add to your knowledge base. Learning Work Programming is a good book and I recommend it if you are interested in learning how to gain more control over MS Word. Sample programs are available online in zip format and can be downloaded from the O’Reilly web site at <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/lrnwdpr/>. For additional reviews on this book, Amazon.com has a sight where you can read reviews by other readers. There are 7 reviews on this book and all are very interesting to read. I accessed the sight by finding the title of the book and then clicking on "Read more about this title…" These reviewers seemed to reach the consensus that this book is geared to the beginning to intermediate user. Learning Word Programming by Steven Roman is available in paperback
only. It is 408 pages long and has ISBN #1565925246. It is available on
line for $27.95 at <www.oreilly.com/catalog/lrnwdpr/>.
It is also available on line at Barnes
and Noble and Amazon.com
for $22.36 at either store. In the past, if I found a book at the Barnes
and Noble Online store, I could call a store in San Antonio and they would
order it for me, usually at the same price as the on line price. I went
by CompUSA and Office Depot and checked their supply of books for this
title, but could not find it at either store. CompUSA does have a lot of
O’Reilly publications and may get this one in.
