Game Review of:
Dungeon Keeper II
An RPG/Strategy game

From the February, 2000 issue of PC Alamode Magazine
by Chris Blaney
How many games are out there where you get to play the hero and save the world from the talons of evil? Just about any game you can think of. . . Well in Dungeon Keeper II the object is just the opposite. You are the bad guy and your quest is to conquer and wipe out any good guy that gets in your way. The basic object of this game is to create an underground fortress; a dungeon that can hold off even the greatest of hero. But you are not alone in your quest. You control Imps that mine for gold and help you build rooms, as well as Trolls, Black Knights, Dark Elves, Bile Demons, and other nasty little creatures that share your same vision. The program is very realistic. In order to keep your creatures happy, you must build lairs and hatchery’s where they may rest and eat. Other rooms that you will build will attract other creatures. Creating a workshop will attract goblins to your dungeon to help you build doors and traps to keep out any intruders.

Installation
Installation is fairly simple to do with this program, it is auto-run through the installation wizard and then you are ready to play.

System requirements
Windows 95/98, 166MHz or faster, 300 MB plus for saved games and Direct X installation, 32 MB RAM, High Color capable 2 MB PCI or AGP video card with DirectDraw support, 4x CD-ROM drive using 32bit Windows driver, Direct 6.1 (provided on the CD), Sound card w/DirectSound support, Keyboard/Mouse.

Q: What exactly do you mean when you say RPG?  A: RPG, or Role Playing Games let you use your imagination and skill to create a situations, problems, and ways of solving them. This program in particular lets you create a dungeon and control creatures as they build, work, fight, eat, and sleep. So in a sense being the dungeon keeper is the character that you portray in this game.
Q: Do the makers of this game support the Internet play (multi-player) option? And if so, are you playing with or against other players over the Internet?  A: Yes, the multiplayer option is available and you can play against other people through your modem through the Dungeon Keeper II server, which is put on the Internet by the software creators, BullFrog.
Q: Does this game have an ending goal you are trying to meet?  A: The basic goal of the game is to create a dungeon of your own, command your creatures to keep your dungeon from being penetrated, and conquer the goodly heroes that stand in your path.
Q: How many hours of entertainment can you expect from this game?  A: The amazing thing about this game is the time limit of entertainment it brings depends on you. You can either create your dungeon quickly and hope to give your enemies a quick lashing before they try and crash through the doors, or you can spend an hour or more strategically placing rooms, traps, and creatures in certain spots to make the Fort Knox of dungeons.
Q: What are some other Role Playing Games that I can compare this game to?  A:  This game could be compared to SimCity with a dark touch, and also some strategy games such as Risk and Stratego.
Q: What if I don’t want to go to the store to buy this game, can I buy this game online and how much does it cost? A: You can buy Dungeon Keeper 2 on Beyond.com for $37.95 plus shipping and handling, and it will take 4 to 6 weeks to ship. And you can also purchase it from Amazon.com
Q: Why is this game considered for mature audiences and consumers rather than younger players? A: Mostly because it does have some blood and guts scenes in it. And also, one of the creatures that you can control is a dark mistress, who likes to hang out in your torture chamber. . .need I say more?
Q: How would you describe the detailing of the backgrounds and graphics of this program?  A:  The detailing and graphic of this game are astounding. The colors are very bright and easy to see. This makes game play more fun and realistic, and makes it an easier game to play for people whose eyesight isn’t that good.
In Conclusion
This game has action, strategy, and it makes you think. And to mix it up a bit, it has great graphics and sound to make for fun game play. If I had to describe this game in one sentence it would be, "It’s one hell of a game…" I recommend checking out the Bullfrog website to see more about this game as well as other goodies that they have put out.
