Clean Sweep 3.0
Software Review by Jeff Zubricky

Clean Sweep Box PhotoMy number one complaint with Windows programs has been that the majority of them did not include an uninstaller. Did the programmers feel that we would never want to remove their work?

The programs installed parts themselves and there associated files all over your drive making the process of uninstalling a real challenge if done manually. Some programmers were thoughtful enough to include an uninstaller, but not too many. There was a whole new field open to programmers who could figure out where all these parts were installed and how to remove them safely. You have probably heard of Uninstaller, Remove It and Clean Sweep, all made removing a program less stressful. With the advent of Windows 95 a program that wants to be Windows 95 compliant has to remove itself, boy what a relief!

Do you still need a program like Clean Sweep? The answer is Yes. You probably have Windows 3.1 programs on your system that you may want to remove. Clean Sweep does a lot more than just uninstalling, it “Cleans” up your computer. There are many functions of Clean Sweep you will find useful. Here is a list of the functions that are available.

 Uninstall

Uninstall does exactly that, Uninstall a program. The Wizard steps you through the whole process and makes a “Back up” so you can undo any changes. Archive  Archive compresses infrequently used files to save disk space, but keeps the program on your computer for future use. Backup  Backup makes a compressed backup of your program, but does not delete it. Move  Move moves a program to a different drive or folder. This is handy for any one adding a drive, or just wanting to move a complete program. Transport  Transport makes a working copy of a program on another computer. This is a handy option for those with two systems. Please read your license agreement to make sure you are complying with that agreement. Some software is permitted on more than one system as long as you don’t use the program at the same time. ( this is a delicate issue ) Duplicate File Finder  Duplicate File Finder searches your drive for files that are exact matches so you can delete the extra files. Redundant DLL Finder  Redundant DLL Finder will find both DLL and VBX files that are redundant and can be safely removed. Unused File Type Finder  Unused File Type Finder finds files that are often not used. How many BMP files can you remove? Low File Usage Finder  Low File Usage Finder finds files you are not using very much, you can get a real idea of what programs you can target for removal. Orphan Finder  Orphan Finder finds all those files that have been left behind and are no longer use. This will clean old files that are just taking up space. Registry Sweep  Registry Sweep will search your Windows 95 Registry for entries that can be removed. Update-It  Update-It is a gem in the program, you can now keep Clean Sweep Updated at the touch of a button. You also can set Clean Sweep to check for updates on a regular schedule.

Recommendation:

Clean Sweep is a very useful utility. I have found many duplicate files on my drive, and I’m sure you will too. I have found it to work very hard at “Cleaning Up” my drive. I recommend Clean Sweep, though not prefect, a very good drive maintenance tool.
