THE PLAYROOM
byJoseph V. Barth

The Playroom Box Photo Requires the same basic configuration as the others - this uses only 700K of the hard disk, though. The program is designed to introduce counting and the alphabet.

Your child selects either Pepper or Ginger as your companion and off you go to the Playroom which is filled with interactive objects. When you click on one of them, songs play and things move and change almost magically. There is a clock for learning to tell time - a computer to click on keys to spell words helped out by Pepper Mouse. The words you type (such as crate) become pictures and they become animated and are musical as well.

There is a Mixed Up Toy which is a character with three body parts that can be mixed into a variety of shapes - and printed out for later use as cutouts.

Ah, and then there is the mousehole which leads to a series of counting games. This game is competitive against a cute robot or Pepper and Ginger. It really helps the younger child learn the relationship between the number and the action.

The ABC book is neat. You select a letter, a picture appears and you can use the cursor to place the picture where you want it as you decorate the house with the items.

The Parents Corner in the manual has many different activities that reinforce the learning from the game. The combination of hearing, seeing, doing and playing is a strong inducement to retain the knowledge picked up while having fun.

The Playroom has a list price of $39.95 and is also worth the money.

Onto the final review of the individual programs:
