Learning Advantage Library 1
by Joseph V. Barth

This is a package of 4 CD-ROM programs by Brøderbund designed to help children from 3 - 7 to develop essential learning skills.

The programs are designed to help teach reading, math, geography, art, creativity and telling time. They work! These programs will help the pre-school child get a jump start on their education and will help them discover that learning can be fun. The parents will enjoy themselves also and you might have a problem keeping the older people away from the computer once they discover some of these programs.

This package contained four separate programs and I will review each one individually. I was assisted in the review by my two grand daughters, ages 4 and 2 and my wife (age censored) who had at least as much fun as the kids did. (At last! Now she knows why I wanted the computer for the grand kids).

Please keep in mind that these programs cost from $34.95 to 44.95 EACH from Brøderbund and may be somewhat cheaper locally but the package price of $79.95 is a genuine bargain and Christmas is just a few months away so - - -. The package is easily worth the money and I strongly urge you to purchase it if you have any children or grand kids in the target age group. Brøderbund has a web site and you can order the software from them at 1-800-521-6263). Street prices are usually lower especially when our Alamo PC discount is available but these are hot programs and may not be found locally unless you start looking now.

Each of the CD-ROM's is designed to operate with either a PC with Windows 3.x or WIN95 or a Macintosh. They require a 386-33 or faster and a 486 is strongly recommended. At least 4 MEG of RAM is necessary as is a SVGA monitor and card. I will list the hard disk space requirements by each program. A windows compatible sound card is also required.

There are troubleshooting guides packaged for each program and they will take you through the most likely problems you might find. Since the programs have a 90 day guarantee, a telephone product support number (at your expense, sadly) and well written manuals, you should be able to isolate the problems and resolve them fairly easily.

Onto reviews of the individual programs:

Well - long review of a masterful product - the 4 CD-ROM set is worth the price and I strongly urge you to let Santa know about it. It will prove to be one of the best investments for your little ones education. Go for it.
