Thinkin'Things2
by Maria Chua

Thinkin' Things (Collection 2) was the recipient of the 1995 NewMedia INVISION Gold Award for Best Elementary Education Product. This is a multimedia learning software developed by Edmark Corporation located at Redmond, Washington. You can write to them at P.O. Box 97021, Redmond, Washington or call at (206) 556-8484.

To run the program, you can either have Windows 3.1, Windows 95 or later as your operating system. And also, you may even run this program using Macintosh.

For Windows users, in addition to the operating systems mentioned above, you'll need at least 8MB RAM, a double-speed CD-ROM drive, 486 or better with 33MHz recommended, Super VGA, a hard disk with 2MB free, a mouse, and a windows-compatible sound-output device. For Macintosh, it requires a 256 color Macintosh, 4 MB RAM, double speed CD-ROM drive and system 6.0.7 or higher.

I am using a 1.2 gig Pentium 100 MHz with quad-speed CD-ROM drive and Windows 95 as my operating system.

I put the CD in the CD-ROM drive and since my Autoplay was enabled, It automatically ran and all I need to do is follow the on-screen instruction for quick installation. If Autoplay is not enabled, click the Start button, choose Run and type d:\setup (where d represents your CD-ROM drive), then follow the on-screen instructions for setup.

After setup, whenever you wanted to use the program, all you need to do is put the disk in the drive and you're ready to go!

Thinkin' Things (Collection 2) is recommended for kids ages 6 to 12. It's objective is to enhance and develop a child's ability to think and explore learning by audio-visual aids.

Before diving in the pool, I suggest you test the water first by clicking Dear Parents icon, it gives you an overview what is in store for your child by using this software. If you don't want to go through that, just click the planet Saturn icon to start Thinkin' Things Collection 2.

In the main menu, there are five learning activities to choose from. Once you entered an activity click the stop icon to return to the Main Menu and click the stop icon again to exit the program.

I believe that this software deserves the Gold Award for Best Elementary Education Product. Why? You will find it yourself by going through all the five learning activities. You can explore it by yourself or with your child.

This application enhances the child's ability to remember figures, images and sounds by playing the Frippletration. It is a concentration game exclusively designed for kids. A child has an option to choose whether he/she wanted a "see" or "hear" problem to develop his/her visual and auditory memory.

For musically-inclined kids, the Toony Tunes is wonderful. Your child can compose and save original songs to develop their creativity. It also has familiar songs included that he can choose to learn how to play them by following exactly what Toony tells them. The Oranga Banga's Band is a similar activity except that it challenges the child to match the sounds he hears to be aware of how rhythms work.

Most of us had watched the movie "Toy Story", we heard about it's 3 dimensional feature. Well, in this application a child will be introduced to on how three-dimensional works by clicking the 2-3D Blox or Snake Blox. In both menus, the child can test his creativity by creating dimensional shapes and explore illusions with dynamic visual effects. It teaches the child to be original and experiment with audio-visual patterns.

I highly recommend this application to parents for their children ages 6 to 12 . Thinkin' Things (Collection 2) is informative but yet entertaining. By the way, as your child successfully answers questions, there is a slider scale that automatically advances and more difficult questions are offered.
