This Murach book might have been called a Guide to the Essentials of WordPerfect 6.X for Windows. It's not one you must have, rather it focuses on the basics. Used continuously throughout--it is a "How to . . ." book. As such, it has greatest applicability to first-time or less experienced WordPerfect users. With this in mind, it covers the subject quite well. But it can also be useful to more advanced users. For example, Chapter 21 answered some "How to . . ." questions on mail merge--which has never been easy for me. It is well organized by topic in four sections and 26 chapters. Importantly, the index works.

This Murach Guide illustrates the perishability of computer publications: When finalized in early 1994, it covered WordPerfect Ver 6.0 and partially covered the interim 6.0a update nearing release. This review is being written on Ver 6.1. Ver 7 for Windows '95 is due out in March--three upgrades in two years. (All three license upgrades, by the way, cost me less than $100 total. Contact me, preferably via E-mail, if you want to know how.)

Versions 6.0 and 6.0a (largely a reliability update) are nearly identical and covered by the Guide. Most of the menus and windows are the same or similar in Ver 6.1. Tool bars and power bars changed a little more. A few new features were added. A sneak preview of Ver 7 indicates it will be similar to 6.1, but will have a number of additional enhancements over 6.0a. Conclusion: This Guide is okay for 6.X Versions. But if you are starting out with Ver 6.1, or if you are a power user and plan to upgrade to Ver 7, you might want to wait. My Ver 7 upgrade is to be a CD ROM, and, as I understand it, won't include a manual. I will get the Murach Guide if there is one.

What makes this Guide right for Alamo PC users: Good coverage of the basics for WordPerfect Versions 6.X, plus a 40 percent discount off this and other Mike Murach and Associates PC books.
