After Dark Screen Saver
for Windows Version 3.2,

Review by John D. Heard

box After Dark is a product of Berkeley Systems from California. They do not have a toll free number but they can be reached by phone at 510-540-5535 , at their Internet Home Page at http://www.berksys.com., by fax at 510-540-0709, and by e-mail at America Online and Compuserve.

This is a screen saver for the home user or the office user. It has a broad selection of displays including Bad Dog!, A visual aquarium called Fish Pro, the familiar Flying Toasters and many more.

Some of the unique features of this edition of After Dark include the Randomizer, so that you can select several of the screen savers and play them in the order you want; Multimodule, so you can customize your screen saver; and Ecologic, which will save wear and tear on your Energy Star compliant monitor by shutting down at a certain time. For the office, it also includes Password protection, to keep your files private.

The System requirements are: 386 or better with Windows 3.1 or Windows 95; either 4 mbs of RAM (Windows 3.1) or 8 mbs of RAM (Windows 95) and 6 mb of free hard disk space; VGA color display required; and a Sound card. Installation may be done by 3 1/2 disks or by CD-ROM, depending on the version you buy. I loaded the CD-ROM version on my 486 computer with only 4 mb of RAM and it works great.

Installation was accomplished quickly and easily with Install and took only a short amount of time. It was very user-friendly and menu fed. The only complaint I had was the documentation and lack of help screens. After Dark provided a Quick Reference Guide that is basically a fold up pamphlet with general information about the features. It did not have enough information about the features like the Randomizer and the Multimodule. I found the answers to my questions by experimentation.

Current SLP and street prices run around $29.00. If you want a good screen saver program, After Dark for Windows is one program worth checking out.
