What do you look at after your computer has been idle for awhile. Is it a blank screen? Perhaps a colored background. Or do you use the default screensaver that comes with Microsoft Windows? Well, why not spice up your screen viewing with something a little more interesting? Below I’ve uncovered an assortment screensavers, some freeware and others shareware; I hope they are of interest to you. All of the screensavers described below are available as shareware or freeware at ZDNet .

I’ll begin with a patriotic piece of freeware, the American Flag Screen saver. This screensaver was created as a homage to the victims of the events of September 11, 2001. It will display images of the American flag when your computer is inactive. The download also includes quotes from well-known Americans and can be used as a personal calendar. Get it at ZDNet. Another screen saver at the same address is 4th of July Fireworks 1.0. Enjoy your own personal fireworks display right on your desktop. Fourth of July Fireworks is an impressive showing of lights, color, and sound delivered to your computer any time of day or year. Watch the cityscape light up with spectacular visions while listening to patriotic music in the background.

The Rippling Water Screensaver Photo Edition 5.0 may also interest you. It displays beautiful animated waterscapes: beautiful nature photos or 3d rendered unreal images with ripples, rendered in real time. These nice images can be set as a wallpaper in one mouse click or can be set automatically every time screen saver starts. So You will get a wallpaper randomizer with it. There are more then 50 images to download from the gallery and there is an option to show only your favorites images, which are changed every ten seconds with nice morphing effects. Try this relaxive screen saver, and it will became your favorite one.

Some folks like the Active Cloud Screensaver 2.1 better than the one with rippling water. Active Clouds screen saver displays beautiful images with floating clouds upon the sky. Clouds are rendered in real time (using MMX and hand-made optimization) and are different every time screen saver starts. There are several options to control clouds: wind speed and direction, auto change image every x (which you set) seconds, stretch images to fit the screen or work with natural resolution, etc. Screen saver comes with 7 really cool skyscapes, more images are available to download from the gallery. Try this reflexive screen saver, and it will become your favorite one.

Living Waterfalls 1.0 has also proven to be a popular screensaver. This screensaver displays realistic animation in beautiful tropical photographic scenes. Watch as water rushes over the falls and bubbles at the bottom, fish swim in the water, ripples appear on the surface of the water, and tropical birds (parrots and flamingoes) fly past, all accompanied by realistic nature sounds and a beautiful musical score in the background. This version is free to use forever. However, it does periodically display ads for the company that made it, including promos for an entirely optional, enhanced pay-for version. The full version costs $14.95 to register. It includes two more breath-taking scenes and some different animations, such as fish jumping out of the water.

Living Wilderness 1.0 transports you deep into the forest for a journey into the wild. Watch this mountain scene as various animals come and go. Animals include deer in the background strolling and nibbling, a gaggle of geese flying and honking in the air, a squirrel frolicking on a tree, and a chipmunk nattering on a rock in the foreground. Add realistic sound effects and soothing guitar music in the background, and your desktop is a complete wilderness experience. The full version includes more animals, including woodpeckers, eagles, and wolves; more animal and nature sounds; and the ability to turn on and off both the sounds and background music.

Another pretty view is the Living Coral Screensaver which beautifully displays an animated undersea ecosystem with beautiful tropical fish, turtles, starfish, urchins, manta rays, and even a few divers in the background. Combine that with the most tranquil music you could imagine, and you will find yourself transported into an underwater sanctuary. The full version includes two more scenes and a beautiful desktop theme with wallpaper, icons, cursors, and screens that will transform your desktop into an enchanting marine world.
