  Freeware & Shareware
February 2002

Tim Hoke

Tim Hoke is the Sr. Pastor at Faith Presbyterian Church, a long-time member of Alamo PC and an avid computer user who loves to try out new programs, especially shareware and freeware. He gets excited about a good deal.  More than that, he enjoys sharing good deals with others.

Why not send him a note about your favorite shareware or freeware programs.

The wonderful world of freeware and shareware is not dwindling one iota. There are so many new and exciting programs being offered. The nice thing about the shareware is that you can try it first and pay only if you want to keep it. Freeware is great because, well, it’s free! Sometimes folks are reluctant to use shareware and freeware because the products are not shrink wrapped and sold off a store shelf. Don’t let that scare you away. I am finding that, more and more, even commercial programs are available online, or can be ordered over the telephone. Some of these show up at my doorstep as only a CD with no manual or directions at all. All this is to say that if you see a freeware or shareware program that interests you, don’t hesitate to give it a try. It might just be better than comparable commercial offerings. Below, I have included some shareware that may tickle your fancy.

vCatch Virus Catcher 3.7.0.1 is free virus protection software that checks all the files sent or downloaded to your computer via e-mail, Web mail, instant messaging, and file-sharing applications. vCatch automatically updates its virus definitions list in your computer once a day. So once you install vCatch, you don't have to do anything else to be constantly protected. In the event that vCatch detects a virus, the software automatically deletes the file and notifies you. vCatch is compatible with Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator, ICQ, Napster, Eudora, Netscape Messenger, Gnutella, iMesh, Hotmail, and YahooMail. Version 3.7 has improved mechanism for detecting viruses in .scr and .pif files and works with Windows 95/98/NT/2000. Get it at <www.vcatch.com>.

RAV AntiVirus Desktop 8.2 protects the contents of your PC from malicious computer viruses. Although the focus here is on thoroughness, simplicity, and ease of use, RAV also includes a lot of extras and is easily set to your liking. It combines a powerful scanner with a code emulator to detect most advanced Java, polymorphic, and macro viruses. It also scans Internet downloads, and protects you from many of the new e-mail worms and viruses. It resides in your system tray to provide constant background monitoring. It can detect more than 58,000 known viruses and employs advanced heuristic analysis techniques to detect unknown viruses and Trojans. A scheduler is available to perform complete or partial unattended scans. RAV also offers a custom skinned interface, logging support, audio support, a DOS antivirus module, virus quarantine support, and a number of settings that enable you to control which drives and folders to scan and how RAV should deal with detected viruses. Special support is available for MS Outlook and MS Office 2000. FREE DAILY updates are included in your license. Excellent documentation and a known virus list are included. It works with Windows 95/98/NT/2000 and can be downloaded at <www.zdnet.com>.

Music lovers might want to try this MusicCity Morpheus. Morpheus is a full-featured P2P file-sharing application that allows users to search for all types of digital media across the MusicCity Network. Morpheus is neither central server-based, like Napster, nor based on the Gnutella file-sharing protocol. The program uses a proprietary peer-to-peer protocol to share files among users on the network. Morpheus offers advanced features such as playlist creation and media management to easily organize your file collection. It also offers an embedded Microsoft media player for audio and video playback, instant messaging, and CPU utilization throttling. The program automatically resumes broken content streams by finding another source. Morpheus also simultaneously transfers content files from multiple sources for fast downloads of large files, even from users with slower connection speeds. It should work with all Windows versions and can be downloaded at <www.musiccity.com>.
