As you probably know, the three rules in purchasing real estate
are location, location, location. Just so, for those of you who have
lost data on your computer, you know that the rule of thumb is backup,
backup, backup. Therefore, I am focusing this column on some programs
that will cost you little, while saving your data, time and peace of mind!
First up is Handy Backup 4.0, an easy-to-use yet powerful backup program designed for Windows 9x/NT/2000/Me/XP. It makes an automatic backup of your critical data to virtually any type of storage media: hard or network drive, CD-RW, FTP, or LAN. Special plug-ins are provided to facilitate the backup of ICQ and MS Outlook data. Strong and on-the-fly file encryption and multi-choice zip compression as well as many other useful features will protect your valuable data.

You might also want to consider BackupOnDemand 2.5.0.2. It runs in the background and monitors your important files for changes, and within seconds modified files are backed up to an archive location. In addition to monitoring files in real time, BackupOnDemand also gives you the ability to create setups that back up files on a set schedule. BackupOnDemand can archive your files to another directory, a second hard drive, a removable drive, CD-R and CD-RW (without the need for additional software), or even across the network to another computer. BackupOnDemand can even back up files that are in use and changing during a backup. Even those tough-to-back-up files such as Outlook PST files and QuickBooks data files now can be easily backed up without closing the application. BackupOnDemand Archive Explorer gives you the ability to easily view or restore up to the last 999 versions of each file in your archive, a real lifesaver when you accidentally overwrite or delete important files.

SmartSync Pro 2.9.0. 703 is a universal tool to back up and synchronize your important data to the same drive, different drive, removable ZIP/JAZ/CD-RW drive, network volume, or even remote computer. To make the application automatically copy new and modified files to some destination, you just need to set up the profile using the wizard just once. The profile defines what, where, and when to copy. Obsolete files will be also removed when they are not needed. If source data is destroyed or lost, it can be recovered with one mouse click. SmartSync Pro can work in two modes: Local backup/synchronization is used to replicate important files to another easily accessible place, to save files to a ZIP archive, to make compressed incremental backups and to synchronize two or more folders. Remote Synchronization is the unique feature that lets you synchronize files and folders when computers can't be connected via a local network.

Another possibility is R-Drive Image 1.0 which creates disk-image files for backup or duplication purposes. A disk-image file contains an exact, byte-by-byte copy of a hard drive, partition, or logical disk and can be created with various compression levels on the fly without stopping Windows OS. These files can then be stored in a variety of places, including various removable media. R-Drive Image is capable of restoring those images on the original disks, on any other partitions, or even on a hard drive's free space. R-Drive Image creates a special bootable diskette for restoring system partition. To restore only certain files from a disk image, you can connect the image as a virtual disk and copy those files directly from the disk image using Windows Explorer or any other file utility. The trial version allows you to verify all R-Drive Image capabilities except creation and restoration of a disk image when R-Drive Image is launched from a bootable floppy disk created by the trial version.
