The last program I’ll include is one I’ve pointed you to before, but
since many of you have likely gotten a DVD burner for Christmas, I’ll mention
it again. DVD Shrink is the cat’s meow for backing up your DVD movies.
Why would you need to shrink a DVD? Well, here’s the answer and it
may be more information than you want, but here goes. Mainstream
DVDs normally fit into one of the following types:DVD5s, also known as
"single layer DVDs" and DVD9s, also known as "double layer DVDs".
DVD9s are too big to fit on a recordable DVD (DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, or
DVD+RW). So what DVD Shrink enables you to do is to selectively remove
unwanted extras (FBI warnings, trailers, making-ofs,...), audio and/or
subtitle tracks, thus progressively lowering the overal files size. If
they are still too big to fit on a DVD±±R, you also have
the option to apply different levels of compression to each part you decided
to keep (even when you decided to keep them all). DVD5 discs do not need
any kind of compression for them to fit on a DVD±±R. DVD
Shrink will enable you to make 1:1 (meaning identical) copies. However,
you can still use DVD Shrink features to remove unwanted content. Once
DVD Shrink has done its job, taking between 15 to 50 minutes, you will
only need the burning software of your choice (like Nero Burning Rom, Nero
Express, RecordNow MAX,...), to write the files created by DVD Shrink to
a recordable DVD. That’s about all there is to it.
Having personally benefitted from this incredible little program, I would encourage all you DVD burner folks to try it before you shell out hard earned money for a commercial program. Ive only had a couple of problems that were readily remedied. For one thing, the operating instructions are pathetic. Fortunately there is a DVD Shrink forum that will answer all your questions. Once I figured out what I was doing wrong DVD Shrink worked perfectly. Another problem I had was that Shrink would not read some of my DVDs. I went up on the forum (that is included on the official DVD Shrink web page) and was told by a kind person that he had solved the problem by either cleaning the disks with soap and water or by applying a DVD scratch remover (Ive yet to do that). Well, when I began to wash my DVDs Shrink copied them perfectly. I would urge you to try this free program before you buy a commercial one. DVD Shrink might just be all you need to get your DVDs to the right size so that you can use your burner program to copy it to a blank DVD.
